CNtyyppisten

CNtyyppisten is a contemporary Finnish experimental music collective formed in 2014 in Helsinki. The group’s name is a playful portmanteau combining the letters “CN” with the word “tyyppi,” meaning “type” in Finnish, and the suffix “‑sten,” a common linguistic ending used in Finnish to denote a group. The founding members are visual artist and sound designer Jani Virtanen, drummer and percussionist Maija Hämäläinen, and multi‑instrumentalist and producer Oskari Rasmus. From its inception, the collective has emphasized a multidisciplinary approach, integrating audio, video, and live performance into cohesive artistic statements.

The collective’s first studio album, *Loomaisuus*, was released in 2015 on the independent label Lasi. It received critical acclaim for its sophisticated blending of glitch electronics, ambient textures, and ritualistic rhythmic structures. In 2017, CNtyyppisten released *Kylj* on the Swedish label Jigsaw. The album expanded their sonic palette with the incorporation of field recordings and spoken word passages, exploring themes of nature and technological alienation. Outside of studio work, the group has been active in the Finnish contemporary art scene, collaborating with visual artists on site‑specific installations and touring Europe with live audiovisual performances.

In recent years, CNtyyppisten has focused on community‑based projects. They established the online platform Cnode, a forum that encourages collaborative creation among musicians, coders, and visual artists. The collective remains a current voice in Finland’s experimental music community, known for its cross‑disciplinary collaborations, inclusive practices, and consistent innovation in sound art.
