CNOTportit

CNOTportit is a theoretical protocol in quantum information science that describes a method for realizing a CNOT operation between qubits that are not co-located, by using port-based mechanisms to port information between nodes. It is discussed in the context of distributed quantum computation and quantum networks as a way to enable nonlocal quantum logic.

Origin and usage: The term has appeared in a small subset of papers and online discussions around distributed quantum computation and quantum networks; it is not an established standard and there is no formal specification widely accepted.

Technical overview: In the typical description, pre-shared entangled resource states are established between the nodes; local operations and measurements performed on the control qubit and part of the entangled resource, followed by classical communication of measurement outcomes to apply conditional corrections, effectively implementing a CNOT across the network.

Applications and challenges: Applications include distributed quantum algorithms, remote quantum logic, and quantum networks; challenges include resource overhead, decoherence, synchronization, and error correction; currently mostly theoretical with experimental demonstrations of related primitives.
