CMYK refers to the subtractive color model used in color printing. The letters stand for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (black). This model is employed because when light shines through these inks, certain wavelengths are absorbed (subtracted), and the remaining wavelengths are reflected to our eyes, creating the colors we see. In theory, combining equal amounts of Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow should produce black, but in practice, this results in a muddy brown. Therefore, Black ink (Key) is added to achieve a true black and to save on expensive cyan, magenta, and yellow inks for darker shades. CMYK is the standard for most commercial printing, including magazines, brochures, packaging, and newspapers. It differs from RGB (Red, Green, Blue), which is an additive color model used for digital displays like monitors and televisions, where colors are created by combining light. Understanding the CMYK model is crucial for designers and printers to ensure accurate color reproduction when preparing files for print.
