CMYK is a subtractive color model used in color printing. It stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (which is Black). In this model, colors are created by subtracting white light from a surface. The inks absorb certain wavelengths of light and reflect others. Cyan ink absorbs red light, magenta absorbs green light, and yellow absorbs blue light. When all three primary colors are combined at full intensity, they theoretically produce black. However, in practice, mixing pure cyan, magenta, and yellow inks results in a muddy brown, not a true black. This is why black ink (Key) is added separately, to achieve deeper blacks and finer detail in prints. The CMYK model is the standard for most commercial printing processes, including magazines, brochures, and packaging. The 'K' in CMYK is often referred to as 'Key' because in traditional four-color printing, the black ink plate was considered the 'key plate' that aligned the other color plates. The percentage of each ink used determines the final color. For example, a light blue might be represented as 70% cyan, 20% magenta, 10% yellow, and 0% black. Understanding the CMYK model is crucial for graphic designers and printers to ensure accurate color reproduction.
