CIEFarbwertemessung, a German term translating to CIE Colorimetry, refers to the standardized scientific method for measuring and specifying colors. Developed by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE), it provides a universal framework for describing colors in a way that is independent of the observer and the specific device used to produce or display the color.

The core of CIEFarbwertemessung relies on the concept of color matching functions, which represent the average response of the human eye to different wavelengths of light. By using these functions and the spectral power distribution of a light source or a colored object, colorimetric values can be calculated. The most common CIE color spaces are CIE XYZ, which represents the primary color stimuli perceived by humans, and CIE L*a*b*, which is designed to be perceptually uniform, meaning that equal distances in the color space correspond to roughly equal perceived color differences.

Instruments used for CIEFarbwertemessung are called colorimeters or spectrophotometers. These devices measure the spectral reflectance or transmittance of a sample and then, using CIE colorimetric calculations, derive values such as L* (lightness), a* (redness/greenness), and b* (yellowness/blueness).
