CCSS

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a set of academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy developed by a consortium of 45 states and the District of Columbia. The standards were designed to provide a consistent, clear understanding of what a student should know and be able to do at the end of each grade. The CCSS were adopted by many states in the United States as part of their education policies, aiming to improve student achievement and prepare students for college and careers.

The CCSS for mathematics emphasize problem-solving, reasoning, and sense-making, with a focus on developing students' ability to think critically and apply mathematical concepts in real-world situations. The standards for English language arts/literacy focus on reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language, with an emphasis on developing students' ability to read complex texts, write coherently, and communicate effectively.

The CCSS were developed by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), with input from educators, parents, and other stakeholders. The standards were first released in 2010 and have since been revised and updated. The CCSS have been a subject of debate and controversy, with some critics arguing that the standards are too rigid and do not allow for enough flexibility in teaching and learning, while others argue that the standards are too focused on standardized testing and do not provide enough opportunities for creativity and innovation. Despite these debates, the CCSS have been widely adopted and implemented in many schools across the United States.
