The Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems, commonly known as CCSDS, is an international standards body chartered in 1982. It is composed of space agencies from around the world. The primary goal of CCSDS is to develop and promote international standards for space mission operations and data exchange. These standards ensure interoperability between different space agencies and their missions, facilitating collaboration and the sharing of data.

CCSDS standards cover a wide range of areas, including space link protocols, telecommand and telemetry, data management, and spaceborne computer systems. Key protocols include the Space Data Link Protocol, which defines how data is transmitted between spacecraft and ground stations, and the Proximity-1 Link Protocol, used for communication between spacecraft in close proximity. Other important standards address data compression, encryption, and file transfer.

The development process within CCSDS involves a consensus-based approach. Member space agencies and their associated industrial partners contribute expertise and propose technical solutions. These proposals are then reviewed, discussed, and refined through working groups and plenary meetings. The resulting standards are published as "Blue Books" and are widely adopted by space agencies and the commercial space industry. By promoting common technical practices, CCSDS standards reduce development costs, improve mission reliability, and enable seamless data exchange, which is crucial for complex international space endeavors.
