CBCT scanning, also known as Cone Beam Computed Tomography, is a specialized type of X-ray imaging technology used in various fields, particularly in dentistry and medicine. Unlike conventional CT scanners that use a fan-shaped beam and rotate around the patient, CBCT uses a cone-shaped X-ray beam. This beam rotates around a patient, acquiring approximately 150-200 two-dimensional images. These images are then reconstructed into a three-dimensional dataset.

The primary advantage of CBCT is its ability to produce detailed, three-dimensional images of hard tissues, including teeth, bones, and soft tissues surrounding them. This provides a more comprehensive view compared to traditional 2D X-rays, allowing for better visualization of structures like nerves, sinuses, and jaw anatomy. The radiation dose is generally lower than that of conventional medical CT scans.

In dentistry, CBCT is frequently used for implant planning, orthodontic assessments, diagnosing impacted teeth, evaluating temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, and endodontic evaluations. Medical applications include imaging the temporal bone, nasal passages, and extremities. The technology's ability to provide precise anatomical information aids clinicians in diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring. The interpretation of CBCT scans requires specialized training.
