CAESanläggningar refers to Compressed Air Energy Storage facilities. These are systems designed to store energy by compressing air into underground geological formations, such as depleted gas reservoirs or salt caverns. When energy is needed, the stored compressed air is released, heated, and used to drive turbines that generate electricity.

The primary purpose of CAES is to provide grid-scale energy storage. This helps to balance fluctuations in electricity supply and demand, particularly with the increasing integration of intermittent renewable energy sources like wind and solar power. CAES facilities can store excess electricity generated during periods of low demand or high renewable output and then discharge it during peak demand or when renewable generation is low.

The technology typically involves an air compressor, a storage reservoir, and an expansion turbine. During charging, electricity powers the compressor, which forces air into the storage cavern. During discharging, the stored air is heated, often using natural gas or other heat sources, and then directed through a turbine connected to a generator to produce electricity. Advanced CAES designs are exploring adiabatic or isothermal processes to improve efficiency by managing the heat generated and lost during compression and expansion.

CAES offers several advantages, including a long lifespan, relatively low operational costs once established, and the ability to provide large amounts of power for extended periods. However, the initial capital investment can be significant, and the efficiency of traditional CAES systems is typically around 40-50%, though newer designs aim to improve this. Environmental considerations include the footprint of the surface facilities and the potential impact on underground geological structures.
