C5specific
C5specific is a term used in immunology and pharmacology to describe reagents and therapies that specifically target the complement component C5. These agents, typically monoclonal antibodies or engineered proteins, bind with high affinity to C5 in the circulation and prevent its proteolytic cleavage by C5 convertase. As a result, production of the inflammatory mediator C5a and the assembly of the membrane attack complex C5b-9 are inhibited, reducing complement-mediated inflammation and cell lysis.
In clinical practice, C5-specific therapies are used to treat diseases driven by uncontrolled terminal complement activation,
Safety considerations include an increased risk of meningococcal infections due to impaired terminal complement activity; vaccination
Terminology: the phrase "C5-specific" or "C5specific" emphasizes selectivity for C5 over other components of the complement
