C1QBP

C1QBP, or complement component 1 q binding protein, is a conserved human protein encoded by the C1QBP gene. Also known as globular C1q receptor (gC1qR) and p32, the protein is broadly expressed in many tissues. It is localized predominantly in the mitochondrial matrix but can also be found in the cytosol, nucleus, and on the cell surface under certain cellular conditions.

Function and roles: C1QBP binds to the globular heads of C1q, a recognition component of the classical complement pathway, and is thought to participate in regulation of complement activation. In addition to its involvement in immunity, C1QBP is associated with mitochondrial functions, including RNA binding and components of RNA processing or translation. The protein is described as a chaperone-like factor that supports assembly of ribonucleoprotein complexes and other macromolecular assemblies, linking metabolic and gene expression pathways.

Localization and interactions: gC1qR/p32 appears in several cellular compartments, allowing it to participate in diverse pathways such as signal transduction, transcriptional regulation, and metabolic control. It interacts with C1q and various other ligands, and its presence on the cell surface can be modulated by cellular stimuli.

Clinical significance: Altered expression, mislocalization, or modification of C1QBP has been reported in certain cancers and during infections. Given its multifaceted roles in immune recognition, mitochondrial biology, and cellular signaling, C1QBP is studied as a potential biomarker and therapeutic target, with ongoing research aimed at clarifying its contributions to health and disease.
