Byteordningar

Byteordningar, also known as byte order or endianness, refers to the order in which bytes are arranged in memory for a multi-byte data type. This concept is fundamental in computer architecture and data representation. There are two primary types of byte order: big-endian and little-endian.

In a big-endian system, the most significant byte (the byte with the highest value) is stored at the lowest memory address. Conversely, in a little-endian system, the least significant byte (the byte with the lowest value) is stored at the lowest memory address. For example, if the hexadecimal value 0x12345678 is stored, a big-endian system would store it as 12, 34, 56, 78 in sequential memory locations, while a little-endian system would store it as 78, 56, 34, 12.

The choice of byte order is an architectural decision made by the processor designer. Some common processors, like those based on the ARM architecture, can operate in either big-endian or little-endian mode, often selectable at boot time. Others, like Intel x86 processors, are predominantly little-endian.

Byte order becomes critically important when data is transferred between systems with different endianness, such as when reading files or network packets. If the byte order is not handled correctly, the data will be interpreted incorrectly, leading to errors or corrupted information. Therefore, programmers often need to be aware of the byte order of the systems involved and implement appropriate byte swapping routines if necessary to ensure data integrity. Standards like network byte order (which is big-endian) exist to facilitate interoperability.
