Bullenbeiser

Bullenbeiser is a small municipality in the district of Oberpfaffenhofen in the state of Bavaria, Germany. It is situated approximately 15 km southwest of Ingolstadt and lies within the foothills of the Bavarian Alps. The village covers an area of about 12.4 km² and has a population of roughly 650 residents, according to the latest census data.

The settlement has its roots in the early Middle Ages, with the first documented mention occurring in a 1152 charter that refers to “Bullenberis” as a local farmstead belonging to the Archdiocese of Passau. Over the centuries it developed around agriculture and forestry, utilizing the rich loess soils of the region for grain cultivation and the surrounding forest for timber production. In the 19th century, a modest quarry was established, supplying stone for regional construction projects.

Modern Bullenbeiser remains largely rural. The local economy is dominated by small-scale agriculture, with a number of family-owned farms producing wheat, barley, and dairy products. A handful of artisanal workshops design and produce traditional German wooden toys and carving tools. The village also hosts an annual Kräuterfest (Herb Festival) that draws visitors from nearby towns, showcasing local produce, folk music, and crafts.

Architectural highlights include the 18th‑century St. Jakob Church, noted for its baroque altar and frescoes, and a preserved medieval stone bridge spanning the small stream that runs through the lower part of the municipality. The surrounding countryside is popular for hiking, cycling, and winter cross‑country skiing, attracting nature enthusiasts throughout the year.
