Bufferjärjestelmien, commonly translated as buffer systems, are chemical solutions designed to resist changes in pH when small amounts of acid or base are added. These systems are crucial in many biological and chemical processes where maintaining a stable pH is essential for optimal function.

A buffer system typically consists of a weak acid and its conjugate base, or a weak base and its conjugate acid. For example, a common biological buffer is the bicarbonate buffer system, which involves carbonic acid (H2CO3) and bicarbonate ions (HCO3-). When an acid is added to this system, the bicarbonate ions react with the excess hydrogen ions to form carbonic acid, thus minimizing the increase in acidity. Conversely, when a base is added, the carbonic acid dissociates to release hydrogen ions, which neutralize the added hydroxide ions, preventing a significant rise in pH.

The effectiveness of a buffer system is measured by its buffer capacity, which is the amount of acid or base it can neutralize before the pH changes significantly. Buffer capacity is generally strongest when the concentrations of the weak acid and its conjugate base (or vice versa) are equal. Buffer systems are vital in maintaining the pH of blood, enzymatic reactions, and various industrial chemical processes, ensuring stability and proper operation.
