Brøggerbreen

Brøggerbreen is a glacier located in Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago in Norway. It is situated in the Brøgger Peninsula, west of the town of Ny-Ålesund. The glacier is named after Waldemar Christopher Brøgger, a Norwegian geologist and politician.

The glacier flows from the northern slopes of the mountains in the Brøggerhalvøya and terminates in a proglacial lake and eventually discharges into the Kongsfjorden. Brøggerbreen is a tidewater glacier, meaning its terminus reaches the sea, although it has been retreating significantly in recent decades.

Like many glaciers in Svalbard, Brøggerbreen is a subject of scientific research, particularly concerning its mass balance, retreat rates, and the impact of climate change. Studies have documented a substantial thinning and retreat of the glacier over the past century, contributing to rising sea levels and alterations in the local glaciological and marine environments. Researchers often use Brøggerbreen as an indicator of broader climatic trends in the Arctic region due to its accessibility and historical data.
