Bräutigam

Bräutigam is the German term for the groom, the man who is about to marry or who has recently married. The word is used in ordinary speech and in the context of wedding ceremonies, in contrast to Braut, the bride.

In German-speaking cultures, the Bräutigam assumes roles in the wedding processional, vows and ring exchange, and related rituals, depending on local tradition. The attire of the Bräutigam ranges from standard business or formal suits to traditional regional dress, such as a Trachtenanzug in parts of Bavaria or the Alpine regions.

Pre-wedding customs associated with the Bräutigam include the Junggesellenabschied (bachelor party) and the Polterabend, a pre-wedding gathering during which guests traditionally break porcelain to ward off evil spirits and bring luck to the couple. In modern weddings, the groom's responsibilities may also encompass planning aspects, giving a toast, or assisting the bride in selecting attire and coordinating with the wedding party; however, practical contributions vary widely by culture and individual preference.

In legal and social terms, the Bräutigam’s rights and duties are defined by the jurisdiction where the marriage takes place, and evolving notions of partnership continue to shape his role in contemporary weddings.
