Bruttonationalinkomsten, often abbreviated as BNI, is a key economic indicator used to measure the total value of goods and services produced by a country's residents, regardless of where the production takes place. It differs from Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in that BNI includes net income from abroad. This means it accounts for income earned by a nation's citizens and businesses operating overseas, minus income earned by foreign residents and businesses within the country.

Essentially, BNI provides a broader picture of a nation's economic output by considering the income flows between a country and the rest of the world. It is calculated by taking the GDP and adding the net primary income from abroad. Primary income includes compensation of employees and income from investments. For instance, if a country's citizens earn more from investments in foreign countries than foreign entities earn from investments within that country, this difference would be added to the GDP to arrive at the BNI.

BNI is a valuable tool for economists and policymakers to understand a nation's economic well-being and its position in the global economy. It helps in analyzing factors like national savings, investment, and consumption patterns.
