Brintcarbonat, also known as hydrogen carbonate or bicarbonate, is a polyatomic anion with the chemical formula HCO₃⁻. It is a conjugate base of carbonic acid (H₂CO₃) and plays a crucial role in various chemical and biological processes. The term "brintcarbonat" is not commonly used in English but is derived from the Norwegian or Danish words for bicarbonate, reflecting its chemical composition.

In aqueous solutions, carbonic acid partially dissociates into bicarbonate and hydrogen ions (H⁺), and bicarbonate can further dissociate into carbonate (CO₃²⁻) and another hydrogen ion. This equilibrium is essential in buffering systems, particularly in biological fluids like blood, where it helps maintain pH stability.
