Brescou

Brescou, also known as Île de Brescou, is a small, uninhabited Mediterranean island off southern France, near Cap d'Agde. It belongs to the commune of Agde in the Hérault department, Occitanie. The island's principal feature is Fort Brescou, a coastal fortress that dominates the site and reflects its military history.

Geography: The island covers a few hectares and rises to a modest elevation; its rocky terrain overlooks the surrounding sea, which is used by local fishing boats and for small craft navigation. The site is part of coastal habitats and is valued for its rugged landscape and sea views.

History: Fort Brescou was constructed in the 17th century by the French crown to defend the coast and secure the approaches to the roadstead of Agde. Over the following centuries it served as a military outpost and underwent periodic updates before being decommissioned. Today the fort and surrounding ruins are preserved as a historical monument, with access typically limited and dependent on protective measures and seasonal schedules.

Access and current status: The island has no permanent residents. Visits are typically by boat from Cap d'Agde or nearby harbors, with arrangements made through local operators or private vessels. As a protected site, access may be restricted to safeguard the fortifications and natural environment. Brescou is regarded as a point of cultural heritage and a notable example of coastal fortifications in the region.
