Boréal refers to the boreal forest, also known as taiga, a biome characterized by coniferous forests and characterized by long, cold winters and short, cool summers. This vast circumpolar belt of vegetation stretches across much of northern North America, Europe, and Asia. Dominant tree species include spruce, fir, pine, and larch.
