Boroszilikát

Boroszilikát is a type of glass characterized by its high silica and boron oxide content. This composition grants it unique properties, notably a very low coefficient of thermal expansion. This means borosilicate glass expands and contracts very little when subjected to temperature changes. This resistance to thermal shock makes it exceptionally durable and less prone to breaking from sudden temperature fluctuations compared to ordinary soda-lime glass.

The primary applications of borosilicate glass stem directly from its thermal and chemical resistance. It is widely used in laboratory glassware, such as beakers, flasks, and test tubes, due to its ability to withstand heating and cooling cycles during experiments and its inertness to most chemicals. In the culinary world, it is found in ovenware, bakeware, and cookware, as it can be safely transferred from a refrigerator to a hot oven.

Beyond laboratory and kitchenware, borosilicate glass is also employed in various industrial settings. It is utilized in lighting fixtures, including high-intensity discharge lamps, and in certain types of optical lenses and filters due to its clarity and stability. The manufacturing process typically involves melting silica sand and boron compounds at high temperatures, followed by controlled cooling to achieve the desired glass structure. Its widespread use is a testament to its balance of properties, making it a versatile and reliable material for demanding applications.
