Boopgørelse

Boopgørelse is a Danish term used in housing administration to denote the settlement or reconciliation of housing-related charges between tenants, landlords, and housing organizations. The word combines bo, meaning to inhabit or live, with opgørelse, meaning settlement or calculation. It refers to the final accounting of a dwelling’s costs or the periodic reconciliation of charges associated with a tenancy or a housing association unit.

In private tenancy and in public or municipal housing, boopgørelse typically occurs at the end of a tenancy or at a regular interval (for example annually) to tally rent, utilities, service charges, maintenance contributions, and other agreed costs. It may also cover the return of a security deposit or the settlement of any outstanding balances.

The statement usually provides an itemized ledger, showing each charge, payment, adjustments, and the resulting balance. It explains any discrepancies and provides receipts or supporting documents and specifies a deadline for payment or refund.

The responsible party (landlord, housing association, or municipal housing office) prepares the boopgørelse and provides the tenant with an opportunity to review and contest items. If disagreements arise, there are typically internal complaint procedures, and, where applicable, external mediation or tenancy courts.

Boopgørelse is part of standard financial management in Danish housing, ensuring transparency in cost allocation and deposit handling, and supporting accountability in the management of rental and housing allowances.
