Bonescoring

Bonescoring is a method of calculating the strength and sex of a bird, specifically a game bird, using the measurement of the circumference of its bones. This technique was widely used in the past in the taxidermy and game bird industries.

The bonescoring system relies on the fact that the bones of male birds are typically larger and thicker than those of female birds. By measuring the circumference of specific bones, such as the skull, tarsometatarsus, and keel bone, a veterinarian or taxidermist can determine the sex and strength of the bird. The size of the bones is also used to determine the age and potential strength of the bird.

Bonescoring is primarily used in the game bird industry to select strong and healthy birds for breeding purposes. The practice is based on the idea that male birds with thicker bones are more likely to produce stronger offspring, and therefore have a higher chance of success in breeding. This technique has also been used to identify birds that are at a higher risk of disease or injury.

While bonescoring has its advantages, it is also considered a relatively primitive method of sexing birds. Modern techniques such as laparoscopy and molecular sexing have largely replaced bonescoring due to their greater accuracy and convenience. However, bonescoring remains a useful tool in the hands of experienced taxidermists and game bird breeders who understand its limitations and can apply it with care.
