Bombarriere

A bombarriere is a traditional Italian defensive structure primarily used in the medieval period, particularly in the regions of Lombardy and Piedmont. The term originates from the Italian word "bombarda," referring to a type of early cannon, as these barriers were often designed to counter artillery attacks. Bombarriere were typically constructed as fortified walls or earthen embankments, sometimes combined with wooden palisades or stone masonry, to protect settlements from enemy incursions or sieges.

These defensive works were often built along the perimeter of towns or castles, serving as an outer line of defense behind which defenders could operate. They were strategically positioned to channel enemy forces into vulnerable points, where they could be more effectively engaged. In some cases, bombarriere were equipped with defensive features such as arrow slits, battlements, or even small towers for archers or crossbowmen.

The design of bombarriere varied depending on the terrain and available materials. Some were simple earthworks, while others incorporated more permanent structures like stone walls or timber revetments. Their effectiveness relied on their ability to disrupt enemy formations and provide cover for defenders.
