Bolusinjeksjon
Bolusinjeksjon refers to the rapid administration of a drug or fluid into the bloodstream over a short period, typically seconds to a few minutes. This method contrasts with slow, continuous infusions. The primary goal of a bolus injection is to quickly achieve a high concentration of the substance in the circulation, leading to a rapid therapeutic effect. This technique is commonly employed in emergency medicine for rapid resuscitation, such as administering intravenous fluids to a hypotensive patient or delivering emergency medications like epinephrine. It is also used in diagnostic procedures, such as contrast agents for imaging studies, where a swift delivery is necessary for optimal visualization. The volume administered in a bolus is usually small, preventing significant fluid overload. Careful consideration is given to the drug's properties, the patient's condition, and potential adverse reactions when determining the appropriate bolus dose and rate of administration. In some cases, repeated bolus injections may be given to maintain therapeutic levels.
