Bokmålsordboka

Bokmålsordboka is the official dictionary for the Bokmål written standard of Norwegian. It provides lexicographic information about Bokmål words, including headwords, pronunciation, grammatical information, inflection, etymology, usage notes, and example sentences. The dictionary aims to document contemporary Bokmål as used in Norway and to reflect spelling variants, pronunciation, and common collocations. It also notes regional styles and typical usage, and records new words and meanings as language develops.

The online edition is produced by the University of Oslo in collaboration with Språkrådet (the Norwegian Language Council). It is part of a family of dictionaries that document Norway’s two official written standards, including Nynorskordboka for Nynorsk. Entries are based on linguistic research and corpus data and are continually updated to reflect current usage. Each entry presents the lemma with its part of speech, inflected forms, etymology, pronunciation, and usage examples, along with cross-references to related terms and synonyms where relevant.
