Bokföringsvalutarisk, also known as accounting currency risk or translation exposure, refers to the risk that a company's financial statements will be affected by fluctuations in exchange rates when translating the financial results of foreign subsidiaries or operations into the parent company's reporting currency. This risk arises when a company conducts business in multiple currencies and needs to consolidate its financial information into a single, primary currency for reporting purposes.

The core issue is that assets, liabilities, revenues, and expenses recorded in a foreign currency will have a different value when expressed in the reporting currency depending on the prevailing exchange rate at the time of translation. This can lead to unrealized gains or losses on the balance sheet, even if the underlying economic value of the foreign operations has not changed. For example, if a Swedish parent company has a subsidiary in the United States, and the US subsidiary's assets are translated into SEK, a strengthening USD will increase the SEK value of those assets, and a weakening USD will decrease it.

This type of risk primarily impacts the consolidated balance sheet and income statement, affecting reported equity and net income. While it does not represent a direct cash flow impact, it can influence investor perceptions, debt covenants, and management decision-making. Companies manage bokföringsvalutarisk through various methods, including hedging strategies, though the effectiveness and necessity of such measures depend on the company's specific circumstances and risk appetite. Disclosure of significant foreign currency translation effects is also a common practice in financial reporting.
