Bocourtii

Bocourtii is a genus of extinct teleost fish that lived during the Late Jurassic period. Fossils of Bocourtii have been found in the Solnhofen Limestone formations of Bavaria, Germany, a Lagerstätte renowned for its exceptionally preserved fossils. The genus was first described by the paleontologist Arthur Smith Woodward in 1901.

Members of the genus Bocourtii were small to medium-sized fish, typically measuring a few centimeters in length. They possessed a fusiform body shape, adapted for swimming. Their fins were generally well-developed, though specific fin structures varied among species. The jaws were lined with small, sharp teeth, suggesting a diet of small invertebrates or planktonic organisms. The scales were cycloid, a common type of scale found in many bony fishes.

The phylogenetic placement of Bocourtii has been a subject of ongoing research. It has been considered within the order Leptolepidiformes, an extinct group of primitive ray-finned fishes that are thought to be ancestral to many modern teleosts. The exceptional preservation of Bocourtii fossils allows for detailed study of their internal anatomy, including skull structure, fin rays, and gill arches, providing valuable insights into early teleost evolution. The presence of Bocourtii in the Solnhofen ecosystem indicates a diverse aquatic environment during the Late Jurassic.
