Blutdruckmessgeräte, also known as sphygmomanometers, are medical devices used to measure a person's blood pressure. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries. It is typically recorded as two numbers: systolic pressure (the higher number, representing the pressure when the heart beats) and diastolic pressure (the lower number, representing the pressure when the heart rests between beats).

There are two main types of blood pressure monitors: manual and digital. Manual devices, often used by healthcare professionals, consist of an inflatable cuff, a bulb to inflate the cuff, a pressure gauge (manometer), and a stethoscope to listen for blood flow sounds. Digital devices are more common for home use. They automatically inflate and deflate the cuff and display the readings on a digital screen. Digital monitors can be upper arm or wrist models.

Regularly monitoring blood pressure can help identify hypertension (high blood pressure) or hypotension (low blood pressure), both of which can have serious health implications if left untreated. It is important to use a blood pressure monitor correctly for accurate readings. This typically involves sitting quietly for a few minutes before measurement, ensuring the cuff is placed at heart level, and avoiding talking during the reading. Calibration of digital devices should be checked periodically.
