Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances from fixed and mobile devices, and building personal area networks (PANs). Invented by telecom vendor Ericsson in 1994, it was originally conceived as a wireless alternative to RS-232 data cables. Bluetooth has evolved significantly since its inception, with various versions released to improve performance, security, and functionality.

The initial specification, Bluetooth 1.0, was released in 1999. Subsequent major versions include Bluetooth 2.0, which introduced Enhanced Data Rate (EDR) for faster speeds, and Bluetooth 3.0, which leveraged Wi-Fi for even higher throughput. Bluetooth 4.0, also known as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), revolutionized the standard by enabling devices with significantly reduced power consumption, making it ideal for wearables and IoT devices.

Bluetooth 5.0, released in 2016, further enhanced range, speed, and broadcast capacity. It introduced features like improved co-existence with other wireless technologies and extended advertising capabilities. The latest major iteration is Bluetooth 5.3, which refines power efficiency, connection robustness, and data transfer. Each version builds upon the previous ones, offering backward compatibility while introducing new capabilities to meet the ever-growing demands of wireless connectivity. The Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) manages the ongoing development and standardization of the technology.
