Blodutstrykning, also known as a peripheral blood smear, is a laboratory technique used to examine the cellular components of blood. It involves spreading a thin layer of blood onto a glass slide, which is then stained and viewed under a microscope. This method allows for the detailed analysis of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

The preparation of a blood smear is a critical diagnostic tool in hematology. Technicians observe the size, shape, color, and number of blood cells. For red blood cells, abnormalities can indicate conditions like anemia or certain genetic disorders. White blood cells are assessed for their types, maturity, and any unusual features, which are crucial for diagnosing infections, inflammatory diseases, and leukemias. Platelets are evaluated for their quantity and appearance, which can help identify bleeding disorders or clotting issues.

The staining process, commonly using Wright's stain or Giemsa stain, differentially colors the cellular components, making them easier to distinguish and analyze. A skilled hematologist or pathologist interprets the smear, looking for specific patterns and anomalies that may not be apparent through automated blood count machines.
