Blinkince is a fictional crystalline material described in speculative fiction and tabletop role-playing game sources. It is presented as both a naturally occurring mineral and a laboratory-synthesized compound, notable for its dynamic optical and electronic properties.

Physical properties: Blinkince occurs in several polymorphs. Crystals are the size of a fingernail to small gems. Color ranges from colorless to azure blue, depending on form and impurities. Hardness on Mohs scale is 5–7. It exhibits rapid, reversible luminescence when excited by visible or ultraviolet light, and a phenomenon known as blink transience, in which the material quickly reconfigures its lattice in response to stimuli, causing transient changes in conductivity and color on nanosecond timescales.

Occurrence and discovery: The first published account comes from prospecting teams in the Shalor Rift, with a 2124 description in the fictional journal Lumina Specula. It has since been reported in several orbiting labs and remote mining settlements in the same setting.

Synthesis and processing: Blinkince is obtainable as a primary mineral or via high-pressure, low-temperature synthesis. Doping with rare-earth elements or transition metals modifies emission spectra and improves stability. The material can form thin films for photonic devices or be used as bulk crystals.

Applications: In-universe, blinkince is explored for optical memory, fast-switching photonic devices, and high-density energy storage because of rapid charge-discharge cycles. It is sometimes used in jewel-like decorative items due to its glow.

Safety and regulation: In the setting, blinkince dust is considered an irritant; standard industrial hygiene applies. No widespread toxicity is reported, but long-term exposure effects are not fully studied.
