Biotoksiiniryhmät, or biotoxin groups, are classifications used to categorize naturally occurring toxic substances produced by living organisms. These toxins, collectively known as biotoxins, can originate from a wide range of sources including bacteria, algae, fungi, plants, and animals. Grouping them helps in understanding their chemical structures, biological activities, and the effects they have on other organisms, particularly humans and animals.

One common grouping is based on the source organism. For example, bacterial biotoxins include potent substances like botulinum toxin from Clostridium botulinum and tetrodotoxin, which can be produced by certain bacteria found in marine animals. Algal biotoxins, often referred to as marine toxins, are produced by microscopic algae and can accumulate in shellfish, leading to conditions like paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) and neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (NSP). Fungal biotoxins, or mycotoxins, are produced by molds and can contaminate food products, causing various health issues.

Another classification method focuses on the chemical structure or mode of action. This includes groups like neurotoxins, which affect the nervous system; cytotoxins, which damage cells; hemotoxins, which affect the blood; and cardiotoxins, which impact the heart. Understanding these groups is crucial for toxicology, public health, and the development of countermeasures such as antidotes and diagnostic methods. Research into biotoxin groups continues to expand as new toxins are discovered and their complex interactions within ecosystems are further elucidated.
