Bioships

Control systems are often portrayed as centralized or distributed across networks of living cells or tissues.

In fiction and speculative design, bioships explore themes of stewardship, entropy, and sustainability, contrasting with conventional metal ships. They raise ethical questions about sentience, autonomy, and the use of living matter as machinery. Real-world research in biohybrid robotics and programmable materials offers related ideas, including self-healing materials, tissue engineering, and synthetic biology, though actual construction of fully living spacecraft remains speculative.
