Biopolttoaineeksi is a Finnish term that translates to "as biofuel." It refers to the conversion of organic matter into energy sources, such as liquid or gaseous fuels, that can be used in place of fossil fuels. The primary goal of utilizing biofuels is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on non-renewable energy resources.

Biofuels are derived from a variety of biological sources. These include crops like corn, sugarcane, soybeans, and rapeseed, which are processed to produce ethanol and biodiesel. Additionally, waste materials such as agricultural residues, forest byproducts, and municipal solid waste can be converted into biofuels through processes like anaerobic digestion or gasification. The sustainability of a biofuel is often assessed by considering its entire life cycle, from cultivation and harvesting to processing and combustion, including land use changes and energy inputs.

The use of biofuels has environmental and economic implications. Environmentally, they can offer a reduction in net carbon emissions compared to fossil fuels, as the carbon dioxide released during combustion is theoretically offset by the carbon dioxide absorbed during the growth of the biomass. Economically, the production of biofuels can create new agricultural markets and rural employment opportunities. However, concerns exist regarding land use competition with food production, potential impacts on biodiversity, and the energy balance of certain biofuel production methods. Regulations and certifications are often in place to promote the development and use of sustainable biofuels.
