Bioindustrie, or bioindustry, refers to the sector that uses biological resources, living systems, or their molecular components to produce goods and services. It encompasses a range of activities from biotechnology research and industrial bioprocessing to the development of bio-based chemicals, materials, energy, and environmental applications. The common goal is to create alternatives to fossil-based processes by leveraging renewable biological routes.

Core segments include biopharmaceuticals and industrial biotechnology, where fermentation, cell culture, and enzymatic processes produce medicines, enzymes, and vaccines. Bio-based chemicals and materials cover the production of bioplastics, bio-based solvents, and renewable polymers. Bioenergy and biogas rely on biomass conversion and anaerobic digestion to generate heat, electricity, or fuels. Environmental biotechnology applies biological systems to wastewater treatment, pollution cleanup, and resource recovery.

Technologies and methods commonly used are fermentation and cell culture, enzyme catalysis, metabolic and synthetic biology, and advanced bioprocess engineering with downstream processing to purify products.
