Bioakkumulaatioksi refers to the biological process where substances accumulate in living organisms to concentrations higher than in the surrounding environment. This occurs when organisms absorb toxic chemicals from water, soil, or food sources at a rate faster than they can excrete or metabolize them. The process is particularly concerning with persistent pollutants like heavy metals, pesticides, and industrial chemicals that do not break down easily in the environment.

The phenomenon follows a food chain pattern, known as biomagnification, where concentrations increase at successive trophic levels. Small organisms may contain low levels of contaminants, but predators that consume many of these organisms accumulate higher concentrations. This can lead to toxic effects in top predators, including humans who consume contaminated seafood or other products.

Bioaccumulation poses significant ecological and health risks, potentially causing reproductive problems, developmental issues, and increased disease susceptibility in affected organisms. Regulatory agencies worldwide establish limits on certain chemicals to minimize these risks, but the persistence of many pollutants continues to challenge environmental protection efforts.
