Bilingues are individuals who use two or more languages in daily life. The term is common in Francophone contexts and refers to proficiency across languages, with varying dominance by domain such as home, school, and work. Bilingualism can be simultaneous, meaning two languages are learned from early childhood, or sequential, meaning a second language is acquired after initial exposure.

Proficiency among bilingues ranges from balanced competence in both languages to dominance in one, with functional ability in the other. Linguistic classifications include compound bilinguals, who share a common conceptual framework across languages, and coordinate bilinguals, who maintain separate lexical representations. Some speakers are receptive bilinguals, understanding more than they can express, while others are productive bilinguals, actively using both languages.

In education, bilingualism supports multilingual literacy but often requires targeted instruction and language-support services to maintain proficiency in each language. Socially, bilingues navigate language choices in different contexts, a practice sometimes described as code-switching or language mixing.

Research on bilingualism and cognition explores potential effects on executive control, attention, and metalinguistic awareness, but findings are nuanced and context-dependent, with effects often small or inconsistent. Demographic trends show growth in bilingual populations due to globalization, migration, and language education policies worldwide.
