Bilfølgingsregler, often translated as "following distance rules" or "tailgating laws," are regulations designed to ensure safe driving distances between vehicles. The primary objective of these rules is to prevent rear-end collisions, which are among the most common types of accidents. These rules typically do not specify a fixed distance in meters or feet but rather a method for drivers to determine an appropriate following distance based on current conditions.

The most widely accepted method for calculating safe following distance is the "two-second rule." This involves observing the vehicle ahead and, when it passes a fixed point (such as a signpost or a bridge), starting to count "one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two." If the driver reaches the fixed point before completing the count, they are following too closely and should increase their distance. This rule provides a buffer that allows for reaction time in case the vehicle ahead brakes suddenly.

However, the two-second rule is a minimum and should be extended under adverse conditions. Factors such as heavy rain, fog, snow, icy roads, or driving at higher speeds necessitate a longer following distance, often three, four, or even more seconds. Similarly, when following larger vehicles like trucks or buses, which may have larger blind spots and take longer to stop, drivers should also increase their following distance.
