Biharsharif

Biharsharif is a city and a municipal corporation in the Nalanda district of Bihar, India. It is the administrative headquarters of the Nalanda district and a significant historical and cultural center. The city is located on the banks of the river Lalsar, approximately 70 kilometers southeast of Patna, the capital of Bihar.

Historically, Biharsharif has been a prominent settlement. It was once the capital of the Pala Empire and later became an important center of learning and administration during the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal periods. The city's name is believed to be derived from "Bihar," meaning monastery, and "Sharif," meaning noble, reflecting its past as a center of religious and intellectual activity.

The city is renowned for its rich historical and religious heritage. It is home to several ancient Sufi shrines, most notably the Makhdum Shah Daulat Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This tomb is a significant pilgrimage destination for Muslims and is known for its exquisite Mughal architecture. Biharsharif also houses the tomb of Badr-ud-din Pir, another revered Sufi saint.

In addition to its religious significance, Biharsharif is a growing educational hub. It is home to Nalanda University, a modern institution established on the ruins of the ancient Nalanda Mahavihara, one of the world's earliest residential universities. The city's economy is primarily based on agriculture, with crops like rice, wheat, and pulses being extensively cultivated in the surrounding fertile plains. Biharsharif also has a developing industrial sector, with small-scale industries contributing to its economic growth. The city is well-connected by road and rail, facilitating transportation and trade.
