Bh1
BH1 refers to two distinct concepts in different domains. In molecular biology, BH1 stands for Bcl-2 homology 1, a conserved protein domain found within the Bcl-2 family. The Bcl-2 family includes both anti-apoptotic and pro-apoptotic proteins that regulate apoptosis, and the BH1 domain is one of a set of four Bcl-2 homology regions (BH1–BH4) that characterize these proteins. In anti-apoptotic members such as Bcl-2, Bcl-xL, and Mcl-1, the BH1 (along with BH2) contributes to forming a hydrophobic groove that binds the BH3 domain of pro-apoptotic proteins, thereby modulating mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization and cell fate under stress. The interplay among the BH1–BH4 domains influences whether a cell survives or undergoes apoptosis, with particular relevance to cancer biology and therapeutic targeting.
