A Beutelbeatmungsmaske, also known as a rebreather mask or a breathing bag mask, is a type of medical device used to administer oxygen or anesthetic gases to a patient. It consists of a mask that fits over the patient's nose and mouth, connected to a breathing bag. This bag acts as a reservoir for the inhaled gases.

The primary function of a Beutelbeatmungsmaske is to allow for controlled ventilation. In cases where a patient is not breathing adequately or requires assistance with breathing, a rescuer or medical professional can manually squeeze the breathing bag. This action forces the gas from the bag into the patient's lungs. The exhaled gas from the patient is then directed back into the breathing bag, where it can be re-breathed, mixed with fresh gas from a supply, or vented away depending on the specific setup and medical protocol.

These masks are commonly used in emergency situations, such as during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), or in operating rooms during anesthesia. They are particularly useful when a patient is unable to breathe on their own or when precise control over ventilation is required. The design allows for a degree of rebreathing, which can help conserve oxygen and maintain a stable concentration of anesthetic gases. The size and shape of the mask are designed to create a seal around the patient's face, minimizing air leaks and ensuring effective delivery of gases.
