Betanaphthol

Betanaphthol, also known as 2-naphthol, is an organic compound with the formula C10H7OH. It is a structural isomer of alpha-naphthol and is a white to tan solid. Betanaphthol is a derivative of naphthalene, with a hydroxyl group attached to the second carbon atom of the naphthalene ring. It is sparingly soluble in water but readily soluble in organic solvents like ethanol, ether, and benzene.

Betanaphthol is primarily manufactured through the alkaline fusion of naphthalene-2-sulfonic acid. This process involves heating the sodium salt of naphthalene-2-sulfonic acid with sodium hydroxide at high temperatures. The resulting product is then acidified and purified.

This compound finds significant use as an intermediate in the synthesis of various organic chemicals. It is a key precursor for the production of azo dyes, which are widely used in textiles, inks, and paints. Betanaphthol is also employed in the manufacturing of fragrances, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals. Historically, it has been used in some antiseptic formulations, although its use in this area has declined. Its derivatives are also explored for their potential biological activities.
