Besættelse is a Danish word that translates to occupation or possession in English. In a historical context, it most commonly refers to the occupation of Denmark by Nazi Germany during World War II, from April 9, 1940, to May 5, 1945. This period significantly impacted Danish society, politics, and culture.

The occupation began with a swift German invasion, leading to a short period of armed resistance before Denmark surrendered to avoid further bloodshed.
