Beogradu

Beograd is the capital and largest city of Serbia, located at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers. It is the administrative, cultural, and economic center of the country and the central node of the City of Belgrade, which encompasses several municipalities.

Belgrade has a long history, dating to the Roman fortress Singidunum. It passed through Byzantine, medieval Serbian, and Ottoman rule before becoming the capital of modern Serbia in the 19th century. The city has developed as a regional hub.

Geographically, Belgrade lies in central Serbia near the country’s geographic center. The historic core sits on the Danube and Sava, where Kalemegdan fortress overlooks the rivers. The urban area includes islands such as Ada Ciganlija used for recreation.

Demographically, the city proper has about 1.2 million residents; the metropolitan area is around 1.6–1.8 million. The population is predominantly ethnic Serb, with minorities including Romani, Hungarians, and Bosniaks. Serbian is the main language; the majority religion is Serbian Orthodox.

Economically, Belgrade centers on services, trade, and IT. It hosts Nikola Tesla Airport and serves as Serbia’s main railway and road hub. The city is home to universities, research institutes, and a growing startup scene.

Cultural life includes theatres, museums, and festivals. The University of Belgrade is one of the region’s oldest and largest universities. Notable districts include Dorćol, Vračar, and Stari Grad, and landmarks such as Kalemegdan, Saint Sava Temple, and Knez Mihailova Street.

Belgrade has an extensive tram and bus network, with ongoing modernization. It is connected regionally by rail and road to capitals in the Balkans and Central Europe, and riverfront projects such as Belgrade Waterfront continue.
