BenioffWadati is a seismic term referring to a specific type of earthquake fault motion characterized by a distinct waveform signature. It describes the seismic waves generated by the subduction of one tectonic plate beneath another. In these zones, the descending plate bends and scrapes against the overriding plate, creating friction and stress. When this stress is released, it generates seismic waves that can be observed and analyzed.

The term is a portmanteau of the names of two prominent seismologists, Hugo Benioff and Kiyoo Wadati, who independently observed and described these characteristic seismic signatures in the mid-20th century. Benioff's work focused on the deep earthquakes occurring along inclined planes beneath the Earth's surface, which are often associated with subduction zones. Wadati, working in Japan, also meticulously studied earthquakes and identified similar patterns related to deep seismic activity and plate tectonics.

The BenioffWadati zone, or Wadati-Benioff zone, is a planar or gently dipping seismic zone that is the result of the subduction of one lithospheric plate beneath another. This zone extends from the Earth's surface down to depths of as much as 700 kilometers. Earthquakes within this zone are typically shallow near the trench and become progressively deeper further inland, outlining the path of the descending slab. The seismic waves produced have a particular pattern that seismologists use to identify and study subduction processes, volcanic activity, and the overall structure of Earth's interior.
