Benförankrade is a Swedish term that translates to "bone-anchored" in English. It refers to a type of implantable medical device that is surgically attached directly to the bone, bypassing soft tissues. This technique is primarily used in audiology and orthopedics.

In audiology, bone-anchored hearing aids (BAHAs) are a common application. These devices utilize a titanium implant screwed into the mastoid bone behind the ear. An external sound processor is then attached to this implant, which vibrates the bone. These vibrations are transmitted directly to the inner ear, bypassing the outer and middle ear. This method is particularly effective for individuals with conductive hearing loss, mixed hearing loss, or single-sided deafness, where traditional hearing aids may not be suitable.

In orthopedics, bone-anchored prosthetics are used to provide a more stable and functional attachment for artificial limbs. Similar to BAHAs, a titanium implant is integrated into the residual bone. The prosthetic limb is then attached to this implant, offering a direct connection that can improve mobility, sensation, and control for the amputee. This approach aims to overcome some of the limitations associated with socket-based prosthetics, such as discomfort, skin irritation, and poor fit. The biocompatibility of titanium is crucial for successful osseointegration, the process by which the bone grows onto and fuses with the implant.
