Benefactions

Benefaction is an act of benevolence or charitable giving intended to benefit others. The term can denote a gift of money, property, or services donated by a benefactor, a person or organization motivated by altruism, gratitude, or social responsibility. The emphasis of benefaction is the act itself, though it commonly results in a public or institutional benefit.

Etymology: Benefaction comes from Latin bene facere, “to do good,” entering English in the early modern period. In modern usage, it is somewhat formal or archaic compared with more common terms like donation or philanthropy.

Scope and usage: Benefactions are central to philanthropy and nonprofit funding. They may support education, health care, culture, scientific research, or community projects. Benefactions can be unrestricted gifts or endowments designated for a specific purpose, such as scholarships, chairs, or building campaigns. Large benefactions, recognized by institutions, may shape organizational direction or capacity.

Benefactor and beneficiary: A benefactor is the donor; a beneficiary is the recipient of the benefaction. The relationship may be formalized in written agreements, including conditions on how funds are used.
