Beltpacks

Beltpacks are compact, wearable electronic devices carried on or attached to a waist belt, designed to house electronics such as transmitters, power supplies, or control electronics. They enable hands-free operation for professionals in audio, broadcast, security, and field work.

The most common beltpack is the wireless microphone transmitter used in film, television, and live events. It is paired with a body microphone and a receiver at the sound mixer’s location. Other beltpacks include portable radio transceivers for security or emergency services, and portable power or battery packs that supply power to cameras, lights, or other gear during shoots or on-site work.

Typical beltpack designs use a compact, rugged enclosure with a belt clip or loop, a battery compartment, and connections for power, data, or audio. Many models feature weatherproofing, simple control buttons, and status indicators. They may support hot-swappable batteries or multiple power options and may be compatible with standard connectors like XLR, 3.5 mm audio jacks, or USB.

Applications span film and television production, live theater and concerts, broadcast journalism, security and public safety operations, and industrial or field service tasks requiring mobile access to radios or equipment. By distributing weight near the hips, beltpacks reduce fatigue compared to handheld gear.

Selection considerations include battery life, weight, durability, environmental ratings, number and type of inputs/outputs, RF performance, and compatibility with other equipment in a system. Proper fit and ergonomic design are important to minimize strain during long shoots or operations.
