Bejing

Beijing, officially the Beijing Municipality, is the capital of the People’s Republic of China and one of the country’s four direct-controlled municipalities. Located in northern China, it borders Hebei Province and the Tianjin Municipality. The name Beijing means “Northern Capital,” reflecting its historical role as the seat of various dynasties and governments. The municipality covers about 16,410 square kilometers and is administratively divided into 16 districts.

Beijing functions as the political, cultural, and educational center of China. It hosts the central government and many national institutions, ministries, and foreign embassies, as well as a large number of universities and research institutes. The city is a major national and international transport hub, served by two international airports—Beijing Capital International Airport and the newer Beijing Daxing International Airport—and an extensive rail and road network. The Beijing Subway provides extensive urban transit across the city.

Economically, Beijing combines government-led administration with services, high-tech industries, media, and finance. The city has a high concentration of cultural institutions, museums, theaters, and media companies, making it a key center for culture and information in China.

Beijing is rich in World Heritage and historic sites. The Forbidden City (Palace Museum), Tiananmen Square, Temple of Heaven, and the Summer Palace are notable landmarks within the city. The Great Wall near the city’s outskirts is a major nearby historic attraction. The city’s modern architecture and historic neighborhoods reflect its long-standing role as a political and cultural capital.
